January

The second annual Ottawa Children’s Gala was held on Saturday, January 21st, 2012. The ballroom at the Hampton Inn was transformed into a spectacular room, with flowing curtains and beautiful lights. Children, young and old, were entertained throughout the evening by child and youth performers. And everyone had the opportunity to hear about the importance of wearing a helmet from brain injury survivors and their families, as well as from Dr. Vassilyadi, a pediatric neurosurgeon at CHEO, Associate Professor of Surgery and Pediatrics at the University of Ottawa, and Director of the Ottawa chapter of ThinkFirst.

With an ongoing commitment to injury prevention, Burn Tucker (the personal injury group of Doucet McBride LLP) is proud to be the presenting sponsor of the Ottawa Children’s Gala. A number of our lawyers and law clerks, along with their families, attended the event on January 21st and had a wonderful time, along with other guests, in celebrating a magical evening. We are pleased to have the opportunity to be a part of such a great evening, bringing families together in support of injury prevention.

July

In July 2011, Laurie Tucker and Éliane Lachaîne won a trial on behalf of a young female injured 10 years earlier in a car accident.  The judge determined that the young female’s difficulties, namely a dependency to narcotic medication and a significant level of psychological dysfunction, were caused or materially contributed to, by the car accident.  As a result, the insurer was required to pay the young female an amount in excess of $195,000.00, plus costs, for outstanding accident benefits, more than half of which was interest owing in accordance with the Statutory Accident Benefits Schedule.
