Burn Tucker Lachaîne Partners are Certified Specialists in Civil Litigation

Did you know that our three partners at Burn Tucker Lachaîne have been certified as specialist in civil litigation by the Law Society of Ontario and are the only women in Ottawa to be certified as such?

The Law Society of Ontario is the legal regulatory body of lawyers and paralegals in Ontario. When you are licensed as a lawyer by the Law Society of Ontario, you can practice in any area of the law.  Some of us practice in only one area and others practice in several areas of the law.   The only distinction amongst lawyers licensed by the Law Society of Ontario is one where some lawyers are certified as specialists in a specific area of the law. The certified specialist program has been in place for over 30 years.

You are probably wondering what becoming a Certified Specialist means?  It is a recognition that:

  1. this lawyer is a leader in her or his field;
  2. this lawyer has met established standards of experience and knowledge requirements;
  3. this lawyer has maintained exemplary standards of professional practice.

Becoming a Certified Specialist in civil litigation is not an easy task. The lawyer must have:

  1. practiced for a minimum of 7 years
  2. had substantial involvement in civil litigation, including mastering substantive law, practice, and procedure
  3. complied with all professional standards requirements.

There are high standards to be met before one can become a certified specialist. Those include several years of practice, recent trial experience, and having a substantial involvement in an area of the law.

Some lawyers do not have the experience to become a certified specialist by the Law Society of Ontario.  The specialist certification gives a potential client an understanding of the lawyer’s high level of competence.

Given their extensive experience in civil litigation, particularly in the area of personal injury, it is no surprise that the Law Society of Ontario certified Colleen Burn, Laurie Tucker and Éliane Lachaîne as specialist in civil litigation. Congratulation to all three partners of Burn Tucker Lachaîne!
